For Liyuan's mask I focused the hardships he has encountered throughout his life and how he overcome those by being rebellious toward the status quo. He is interested in defying gender norms such as wearing skirts and uses textiles to rebel against these “norms”. In my eyes, he is a warrior fighting against what his parents and society expect from him.

His object was also influenced by his Chinese culture and by his upbringing in a warehouse, in what he calls “a spartan way of living” by using industrial materials and repurposed ones. The skirt/apron reflects the gender fluidity in clothing as well as the predilection he has to make textiles serve a purpose.
